Joseph Anthony Crump

EIGHth department commander

2008-2009

Squadron 495, Millis

Joseph Crump served as State Commander from 2008-2009.  He was unanimously elected at the State Convention held in Sturbridge, MA by his peers in June of 2008.  Joe was the first Son in Massachusetts to be elected Commander without ever being opposed.

Prior to being elected State Commander, Joe served as State First Vice Commander for Membership for two terms, and was the State Judge Advocate.

His Commandership was one of turmoil due to issues affecting the Sons at Squadron 1, as well as among the State Officers.  Joe resigned for personal reasons just prior to his March SEC, just as the aforementioned issues were reaching their resolutions.

Before becoming a State Officer, Joe was very active at his Post, having held the offices of Squadron Commander and First Vice Commander numerous times.  In addition, he was the function hall manager and was responsible for setting up for any hall rentals, etc.

Sadly, Commander Crump passed away suddenly after being struck by a motorist on Friday, December 11, 2009 while walking to Post 495.  He was interred on Friday, December 18, 2009 at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Millis, Massachusetts.  He is survived by his wife Betty, his son Edmund and his daughter Marion.

On Memorial Day in 2010, the AMVETS gave the ultimate honor to Joe when they renamed their function hall in his memory.
